I am a bit embarrassed to admit this…

I have discovered that, for chaotic situations in the game (PvP, raid bosses, whenever things are going crazy), certain kinds of music fit perfectly…

Yes, I am talking about Lady Gaga. And the Black-Eyed Peas. And anyone else who fits in that hip-hop/dance/whatever-you-want-to-call-it genre.

Now I will attempt to defend myself. I do not listen to this kind of music, except when it is my wife’s turn to play something in the car that she likes. While I was playing WoW a couple weeks ago, she was doing a little bit of cleaning, and cranked up Gaga. And it was surprisingly fun.

There I said it.

Love me some gaga…

Call when you want,
But there’s no one home,
And you’re not gonna reach my telephone!
‘Cause I’m out in the club,
And I’m sippin’ that bubb,
And you’re not gonna reach my telephone!

Wow, I just realized how similar those lyrics are to the Black-Eyed Peas

Imma be up in the club
Doin whatever I like
Imma be poppin that bubb-ly
Coolin and livin that good life

Cracked.com had a article on bands that “borrow” from other bands, Black-Eyed Peas was a big offender. I don’t listen to there music so would not know personally.

Like most people my musical taste is completely dependent on the kind of mood that I’m in at the moment; but here are some of my overall favorites.

Fugazi - Any record is a great choice, though 13 Songs is probably my favorite.

Shellac - At Action Park changed my musical listening forever. It should also be noted that I could listen to Steve Albini talk about trickle down economics and be completely entertained.

Ani DiFranco - Everything she does is great in my opinion.

Tom Waits - Waits music for me is like the weather in the mid-west. Don’t like it now? Wait three tracks later.

Talking Heads - Psycho Killer, Qu’est que c’est, Fa Fa Fa Faa Fa Fa Fa Fa Faaaar better. Seriously, nerd rocking, what’s better that that???

Beck - Everything, love it.

NoNoNo.

Best Music:

The Eagles
Reo Speedwagon
Styx
BeeGees
Neil Diamond
Garth Brooks
Reba McIntire

And songs from the 50’s and 60’s

Now that is music!!!

In the totally obvious category…

Aerosmith
Ozzy
Alice Cooper
Beatles
U2
Credence Clearwater Revival
Styx
Billy Idol
Simon & Garfunkel
David Bowie
Poison
Tom Petty
Bon Jovi
AC/DC
The Cure
Depeche Mode
Iron Maiden
Steppenwolf
Pat Benatar
Pearl Jam… Soundgarden goes hand in hand with them for me
Rolling Stones
R.E.M.
Guns’N’Roses
The Who

Other great ones I would suggest…

Mumford and Sons… currently one of my favorite. it’s different. folk-rockish.
Green Day… these guys have come such a long way from when I remember them. We got to see them in concert not too long back and they were amazing. One of the best concerts I’ve been to ever (even better than U2 which I saw around the same time.)
Oasis
No Doubt
Weezer
Breaking Benjamin
Our Lady Peace
Abney Park… a little more on the obscure side, but I like these guys. More along the electronic/industrial side of things. Assemblage 23 also another one.
The Offspring
Silverchair
Jack Johnson
James Blunt
Jason Mraz
Halo in Reverse… very NIN’ish
Iced Earth… heavy metal band. I’m still annoyed that I missed these guys in Vancouver, what was it, 5 or so years ago now?
Blue Man Group… these guys are amazing. The things they can do with PVC pipes is unbelievable. If you ever get the chance to see them live, it’s well worth it. They do a really fun show.
Blue October
AFI
Placebo
Prodigy… Fat of the Land is the only album I have, and I’ve had it for as long as I can remember and would recommend it for sure
Type O Negative
Bad Religion… I can’t say enough good about these guys. I really liked New Maps of Hell, it was a little darker than their previous stuff but it’s all good.
Avenged Sevenfold…these guys I’m listening to a fair bit at the moment, Nightmare album in particular.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Queens of the Stone Age
The Ataris
Goo Goo Dolls… I think A Boy Named Goo is their best album, personally
Beck… is interesting…
Collide
Dave Matthews Band
Matthew Good Band
Coal Chamber… their pre Dark Days stuff
Nightwish… what would you get if you crossed metal and the opera?
Feeder
Filter
Gnarls Barkley… this one is different too, unique. I like it.
Tori Amos
Jewel
Lifehouse
Alice in Chains
Nirvana
Bush
Collective Soul
The Corrs
Cranberries
The Fray… How to Save a Life
Garbage
Coheed and Cambria
Aimee Mann… I’d suggest the Magnolia Soundtrack, she did just about the entire thing. Lovely music.
Dido… Life for Rent
The Eels
Muse
Finger Eleven… great Canadian band!
Tool… and of course if you like them then there’s always A Perfect Circle also
Linkin Park… just not the remixes
Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Millencolin
Matchbox 20
Stabbing Westward… another industrial band
Foo Fighters
Creed
Danzig
Cold… 13 Ways to Bleed on Stage is the only album I’ve heard and can recommend
Chumbawamba… Tubthumper is a fun album, I have no idea about anything else they do
Monster Magnet
Motley Crue
Pop Will Eat Itself… not for everyone, that’s for sure. Same with Mindless Self Indulgence
Smashing Pumpkins… My other favorite band. You already listed NIN so I don’t have to give you that.
Rammstein, Die Toten Hosen… 2 great german bands (I have a fondness for the language) although different musical styles
Counting Crows

It’s a little random, so just because you like one thing on my list doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll like anything else. I could keep going because all I do is listen to music, but I’ll leave it at that.

Holy cow Ryla…that’s quite a list. I actually listen to a lot of the same stuff and I’ll totally echo the nod to Mumford and Sons. I’m loving what I’m hearing out of them so far.

Or really old school: Bach Cello Suites.

Other songs you must listen to at least once… the relaxation/contemplation list:
Primitive Radio Gods: “Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money in My Hand”
54-40: “Crossing a Canyon”
Blue October: “Into the Ocean” (I think I saw Blue October above, they have some very very different sounds in their music, lots of variety. But I could listen to this song over and over and over).
Weakerthans: “Sun in an empty room”
Wintersleep: “Weighty ghost”

Ryla wrote…

Bad Religion… I can’t say enough good about these guys. I really liked New Maps of Hell, it was a little darker than their previous stuff but it’s all good.

Orc and Scullie going to see Bad Religion & Rise Against next month!

I listen to many of the groups already mentioned, these would be my most popular:
Led Zeppelin, Tool, Rush, Dream Theater, Pink Floyd, Journey, Enigma, ES Posthumus

Here are a few that haven’t been mentioned:
The Immediate
Hybrid
Fluke
Pitch Black
Juno Reactor
The Crystal Method

Whooziwahatzit? Orc and Scullie are old-school hardcore fans? Badass. My HS girlfriend made me a cassette-tape copy of Against the Grain, and to this day my iPod lurves 21st Century (Digital Boy), Entropy, and Anesthesia.

These days, however, my rotation looks more like:

Raffi
Elizabeth Mitchell
Laurie Berkner
aaaand, of course, Jack Johnson and Friends’ Singalongs and Lullabies for the Film Curious George.

I’m waiting desperately to introduce Mini-Pix to Tenacious D and Sound Mound, but she’s not quite up for it yet. Soon.

Ryla is jealous

Against the Grain was/is still a great one. A lot of my favorite Bad Religion songs come from that time.
